Celtic make fun of Rangers legend Graeme Souness for Callum McGregor’s criticism following the captain’s contribution to Scotland’s goal.

After their captain assisted in setting up Scott McTominay’s opening goal for Switzerland, Celtic made fun of Graeme Souness for what appeared to be criticism of Callum McGregor.

In the first half of tonight’s second Euro 2024 match, McTominay gave the Scots a brief lead when his shot was deflected past Swiss goalkeeper Yan Sommer, scoring another significant goal for his nation.

The player who received the assist was McGregor, who calmly sent it to the Manchester United midfielder in the box.

As the Scotland national team posted, the Hoops’ social media team reacted by supporting their player and adding, “‘The Celtic Captain’ sets up the opener.

” A reference to the 30-year-old as ‘The Celtic captain’ was a throwback to Rangers legend Souness, who berated him for his involvement in two of Germany’s goals during their 5-1 thumping of us on Friday night.

“Again, fantastic turn from Gundogan as he slips Havertz in, back to Musiala, and again, wrong foots the Celtic captain, that’s two in one move,” he stated during a live broadcast on ITV. Just stay goalside and cease working toward your goal.

Callum McGregor tries to nick it here and then gets back in and tries to nick it again.”

Although some fans thought the pundit was being disrespectful to the player by not using his name, he moved to set the record straight this week after being questioned on talkSPORT. “I can answer that, I couldn’t remember his name,” he clarified. However, I was aware that he led Celtic.

I held him to a high standard because, as you may recall from the goal’s build-up, he attempted to pass off [Ilkay] Gundogan, and Gundogan turned him.

He attempted to nick it by stepping in front of the ball when he should have just been goal side trying to get a challenge in. Later in the same attack that resulted in the goal, he attempted to steal it from Jamal Musiala once more.

He attempted to nick it twice rather than simply being strong in the challenge, which would have stopped us from giving up that goal.

“I must admit, that is an issue that can only come up in Scotland’s west. I knew he was a good young football player, even though I couldn’t recall his name.

If my comment came out as disparaging or critical, that’s not my intention. Really, I couldn’t recall his name.” “Yes, you do,” McGregor said, acknowledging that he took the criticism personally.

If someone makes fun of you, you should, in my opinion, take it personally and work to disprove them. Thus, yes.”
