Wolves mourn Matija Sarkic passing

Tributes flooded in over the weekend after the death of former Wolves goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, aged 26.

On Saturday morning, it was officially reported that the Montenegrin, who attended Molineux from 2020 to 2023, had died at home.

Sarkic left a lasting impression on people he interacted with despite making just three competitive senior appearances for Wolves in cup competitions.

Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs was integral in recruiting Sarkic from Villa in a previous role at Molineux and led the tributes.

Hobbs stated: “Everyone at Wolves is devastated to hear of Mati’s passing.

It’s unbelievable heartbreaking.” Although he was an excellent goalie, everyone adored him as a person beyond everything else. Mati was a very well-liked person in the club who was constantly grinning.

In addition to his hard work, he was incredibly affable, courteous, and kind to all of the Compton staff members.

The Grimsby native Sarkic earned his ninth senior cap for Montenegro and excelled with a man-of-the-match performance despite a 2-0 loss against a formidable Belgium team, just ten days before his death was officially announced.

Sarkic, a former Villa youth goalkeeper, played 33 games for the Lions last season after leaving Wolves for Millwall 12 months prior.

Ex-Wolves favourite Dave Edwards played alongside Sarkic at Shrewsbury Town in 2020/21.

“One of life’s good guys taken far too young,” said Edwards in a post. My condolences and thoughts are with Mati’s friends and family.

“Everyone fortunate enough to be in his company enjoyed the company of such a warm, kind-hearted, intelligent, and inspirational young man.” RIP, Mati.
