The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of questions heading into this season. Financially, they are in the final year of contracts with several key players, including CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott. Furthermore, head coach Mike McCarthy is in the final year of his contract and must lead the team to a deep playoff run to secure his future with the organization. Although the Cowboys’ roster is largely established for the season, the team is never complete. The team will aim to shed more players in order to improve the squad and gain draft capital for the future. Here are several players who could be traded before the season starts.

1. Trey Lance

Trey Lance is a compelling mystery. Traded to the Cowboys last year in return for a fourth-round pick, it is unclear what Dallas has on their hands. Lance, the third overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, struggled with performance before being injured and losing his starting role to Brock Purdy. Lance is still in his first offseason with Dallas. The Cowboys rightly refused Lance’s fifth-year option, and he is now in the final year of his deal. Lance is 24, which is roughly the same age as 2024 draftees Michael Penix Jr. (Atlanta Falcons) and Bo Nix (Denver Broncos).

Prescott and Rush are well-established with the team, and there is no reason for either to play extensively during the preseason. Given Lance’s unclear future with the Cowboys beyond this season, Dallas could trade him just before the season. Lance should take advantage of the opportunity to display his abilities to clubs in need of a quarterback, earning the Cowboys at least what they paid to get Lance.

2. Peyton Hendershot

Hendershot is a trade prospect since the Cowboys have plenty of tight end depth. Jake Ferguson is the pack’s leader, coming off an outstanding second season that won him a trip to the Pro Bowl. Luke Schoonmaker, a second-round choice from last year, will be given multiple opportunity to play a significant role. John Stephens is recovering from injury, but he is an athletic mismatch for linebackers and defensive backs. Meanwhile, Brevyn Spann-Ford is a hard-hitting blocker. Symbol: 00:00 00:00 Except for Stephens, Hendershot’s blocking may be the weakest of the tight end corps. Hendershot must also return from an injury-plagued year and rebuild his depth chart from the ground up.

What works in Hendershots’ favor is he is an athletic, receiving tight end with a pass-catching upside, making him an appealing option to potential suitors. The downside is that he’d compete with John Stephens, who boasts a similar athletic profile. Trading Hendershot wouldn’t be to acquire draft capital but to acquire a prospect to fill a need. For example, Dallas could trade Hendershot for a linebacker or reserve offensive linemen.

3. Nashon Wright

Nashon Wright is another athlete that is entering the final year of his contract. Wright has underwhelmed in his tenure with the Cowboys since being selected in the third round in 2021, largely acting as a special teams gunner and occasional boundary cornerback. Wright suffers in coverage off the line of scrimmage and is less effective when he is unable to redirect receivers off the snap. Wright’s grip on a roster place may slip with the arrival of Caelen Carson. Carson is a rookie who many consider to be a steal, and in order to get more snaps, he needs to take them away from Wright on special teams.
