Did the Cowboys’ linebacker situation change for the better?
Last season, the Cowboys’ linebackers were criticized for being one of the team’s weaker positions.
Growing up, I was always interested with the linebacker position in the National Football League. My favourite video game was Madden 2005. It was the first year that the hit stick was used in gaming. That feature was created in honor of Ray Lewis, a Hall of Fame linebacker who spent his whole career with the Baltimore Ravens. It was a dramatic contrast to the previous year’s game, which had Atlanta’s Michael Vick on the cover. Vick was a cheat code in the 2004 edition of the game, and the creators had to take action to combat it. The hit stick, along with the evolution of the video game linebacker, changed everything.
Nearly 20 years later, I am still fascinated by NFL linebackers. Some of my favorite players in the game today include Nick Bolton of Kansas City, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw of San Francisco, Roquan Smith of Baltimore, and, of course, Micah Parsons of Dallas.
But wait a minute, Mario. Isn’t Micah Parsons a defensive end? Not so fast. He is technically a hybrid, although he will play in a new defense in 2024. After Dan Quinn left for the Washington Commanders, the Cowboys welcomed back an old face to call the defense, along with a few other former Cowboys. Mike Zimmer, the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator in the late 1990s and early 2000s, may have some suggestions about how to use Micah and the rest of the linebackers.
