Dallas Cowboys and the Cooper Rush conundrum

Dallas Cowboys and the Cooper Rush conundrum

From the outside looking in, it appears that the Dallas Cowboys may be faced with a quandary over Cooper Rush’s future. With Dak Prescott firmly ensconced as the unquestioned starter for at least the 2024 season, and the need to figure out what they have in Trey Lance, making room for No. 10 may be difficult. Because training camp is used to prepare for the upcoming 2024 NFL season, Dak Prescott will receive the majority, if not all, of the starting reps in Oxnard. Once the preseason games begin, Dallas will want to use those snaps to see what they have in Trey Lance. So where does Cooper Rush fit in?

The Cowboys are already aware of Cooper Rush’s abilities and what he can do if and when called upon. He has been Dak Prescott’s primary backup for years and understands what it takes to be a QB2. And, given that the players and system have remained unchanged from a year ago, whatever practice time he requires to catch up should be limited. Sadly, all of this could be his undoing. When Dak is not on the field during practice or preseason, Trey Lance will most likely take the spotlight. Dallas will give him every chance to demonstrate his abilities in the aim of either enabling a trade to a QB-needy team or justifying potentially keeping him around for future purposes.

There are those who believe there could be a QB2 position battle between Lance and Rush, but if there is it’s one that looks as if it’s pretty one-sided in favor of No. 19. Being pretty much a complete mystery, but one packed with undeniable intrigue, Lance’s upside as a QB prospect simply demands more attention right now.

Sometimes the mystery grabs the attention more over a known commodity. That could be the best way to describe Rush’s current situation with the Cowboys right now and the conundrum they face prior to training camp and preseason. And unfortunately for No. 10, it’s a situation that could lead to the end of his time in Dallas.

Past accomplishments may still carry some weight if there is a true QB2 contest, which would only strengthen Rush’s case, but Dallas’ investment and interest in the younger and more skilled QB appears to favor Lance. Only time will tell, but training camp and preseason should provide further insight into the problem.
