Dak Prescott, Patrick Mahomes regular-season stats comparison stirs up fans
In the NFL, a 50-game sample size compares a player’s career to that of his peers, which equates to approximately three seasons (17 regular season games x 3 = 51 games). CBS Sports compared Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott to Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, revealing similar success over the last three seasons.
Prescott has clearly been one of the top regular-season quarterbacks in NFL history over his first eight seasons. However, his failure to advance Dallas past the Divisional Round casts a pall over his otherwise outstanding performance, leaving him short of universal acclaim. Mahomes, while having a rather quiet year by his own inhuman standards in 2023, is currently reveling in the triumph of yet another Super Bowl victory, adding to his already magnificent trophy case. Let us be clear: Prescott and Mahomes are not in the same zip code. Prescott was only confused for Mahomes once, by young Aaiden Diggs on Hard Knocks in 2021. The sheer scope of Mahomes’ accomplishments in a short period of time elicits admiration and amazement, propelling him to a Hall of Fame conversation.
Unfortunately, Prescott has not been the same quarterback as Mahomes in the playoffs. Since his debut as a starter in 2018, Mahomes has appeared in 18 postseason games. Prescott has appeared in six games over the same time period. Mahomes’ pass rating is 105.8. Since 2018, Prescott’s postseason passer rating has been 90.0. Mahomes has won three Super Bowls, but Prescott has yet to reach the Championship Round.
Those are the stats that really matter in the end. The Cowboys would prefer to sign an extension with their franchise’s star player. We’re still not sure if that will happen. We know that if Prescott had Mahomes’ postseason performance, we would not have reached the current contract impasse, regardless of regular-season stats.
