Derek Ferguson believes Thomas Galdames “ticks all the boxes” of what Philippe Clement needs

Derek Ferguson believes Thomas Galdames “ticks all the boxes” of what Philippe Clement needs to improve his defence this summer. Interest in the Chilean, who can play on the left or in the centre, has grown after a move for Jose Cordoba fell through, with a cut-price deal possible given he has only six months left on his Godoy Cruz contract [Daily Record, 29 May].

Ferguson, an ex-Ibrox midfielder, believes the Light Blues need more physicality in their back line and hopes that bringing Galames would help overcome disappointment after losing out on the Cordoba deal.

We’re looking for players with a winning mindset to join our team. Despite not acquiring a single player from Cordoba, this young man appears to fit the bill.

“But you never know until they’re through the door and they’re out the playing.”
Very little of the picture in the Gers defence is set in stone this summer, with only the newly re-signed Leon Balogun and perhaps John Souttar sure to be in place for next season along with the new arrivals.

Jefte has been brought in as a left-back, while fellow 20-year-old Clinton Nsiala has joined the centre-back options. However, Borna Barisic has already left, and Ridvan Yilmaz is once again a target in Turkey [Sabah Spor, 10 June], while big names James Tavernier and Connor Goldson have been linked to Saudi Arabia [Daily Record, 24 April], and lesser-known defenders such as Leon King and Ben Davies are also expected to leave.

Even if there are only a few more departures, it appears like Clement and Nils Koppen will need to add to the roster to overcome the lack of consistency that has plagued the team in recent seasons.
