A “towering” defender compared to Virgil van Dijk could be acquired by Wolves in exchange for Max Kilman.

In order to address their defensive issues, Wolves may sign the defender that Bruno Lage desired in 2022.

With the signing of Portuguese talent Rodrigo Gomes, Gary O’Neil has made significant progress in strengthening his assault during this transfer window at Wolves.

O’Neil needs to develop in more areas than simply the final third; his defense also needs to be strengthened. The 20-year-old will provide a lot of speed and cunning at numerous places.

Only West Ham, Sheffield United, and Luton Town gave up more potentially hazardous opportunities than the Old Gold at the end of the 2023–24 Premier League season, with the Old Gold finishing with the fourth-highest expected goals against (xGA).

Following Craig Dawson’s catastrophic injury during Wolves’ 3-0 loss to Newcastle United in March, the Wanderers’ defense broke down badly, allowing 20 goals to be scored in their remaining 11 games.

The veteran defender was absent for all of them and his presence was sorely missed, although with his contract expiring in 2025, O’Neil could sign a long-term replacement this summer.

Wolves linked with David Carmo, Bruno Lage wanted him in 2022

In the summer of 2022, Wolves were linked with a move for Braga defender David Carmo when Bruno Lage was in charge at Molineux.

Fast forward two years and it appears the club have rekindled their liking for the Angolan, with a report claiming that Wolves have expressed an interest in the 24-year-old.

Carmo spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Olympiacos, the winners of the Europa Conference League, before joining the Portuguese powerhouse Porto in 2022.

Fresh off a championship with the Greek powerhouses, Carmo is a “towering” figure who would be an improvement over Max Kilman, according to a scout report.

David Carmo would be an upgrade on Max Kilman

A detailed report from the Athletic indicated that Wolves want to keep Kilman this summer however, if a side offers a fee in the region of £40 million, the Englishman would be sold.

Many fans would give anything to have Carmo instead of the 26-year-old, and if West Ham were ready to spend that much, Carmo would be a great addition.

Because of his size and skill with the ball, Carmo is superior to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk at center defense. He also succeeds in physical duels, an area in which Kilman frequently fails, and displays a beautiful passing range.

The Angolan international leads the Wolves defender in progressive passes, aerials won, blocks, and many other metrics, according to FBref.

Kilman surpasses Carmo in several defensive metrics as Wolves assume greater accountability in that area; nonetheless, the Porto player excels in his aerial skills, advancing play forward with the ball and winning possession high.

With 4.42 aerials won per 90 and 1.49 touches in the opposition penalty area, Carmo is a menace in both boxes and would provide O’Neil with a serious threat from set pieces.

Kilman could leave Molineux if the appropriate offer comes in, but the behemoth, who is of Portuguese descent, would be a fitting improvement for a reported £15 million.
