Peter Grant has instructed Philippe Clement, the manager of the Rangers, to sell James Tavernier and Connor Goldson in order to raise money for Jack Butland’s new deal at Ibrox.
Before the summer transfer window opens, both defenders have been connected to potential departures.
Reports from the Saudi Pro League indicate that Steven Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq are interested in both players [Daily Record, 24 April].
Despite the fact that neither player has received an official offer to sign, Go Radio analyst Grant has pushed the Gers manager to use the proceeds from their sales to give Butland a better contract in Glasgow.
He remarked, “I asked you the question what would Rangers fans think?” on The Go Radio Football Show on June 11 at 12:55. Which would you prefer: receiving funds for the two boys and maintaining Butland? “For me, I would because I believe that having a goalkeeper is essential.
If I could offer Jack Butland an additional few shillings to prolong his contract, I would do so without a doubt because I believe the manager will see them and conclude that I require something else.
“I need defenders who will try to maintain that level of defense and do a good job of it.
Despite everything James Tavernier has accomplished thus far, you have to admit that there are still concerns over his defense. “I think Philippe Clement has looked at it and thought I need to improve that,” I said, echoing Goldson’s thoughts.
Will James Tavernier be sold by the Rangers during the Ibrox summer transfer window?
Although a number of players have already departed Ibrox, it wouldn’t be shocking to see a few more follow suit in the upcoming weeks. Clement has made no secret of his intention to make changes to his Gers squad this summer.
Both Tavernier and Goldson have seen a significant decline in performance this season, and although most fans and commentators originally regarded them as heroes, most are now wishing they may be sold to raise money for Clement’s massive summer makeover.
There is a sense at Ibrox that if an official bid is made for either player this summer—as long as the Light Blues get their asking price—nobody will stand in their way.
The funds raised are unlikely to be used to pay for Butland to sign a new contract in Glasgow, but those in the background will probably be making every effort to keep the Englishman from leaving for the Premier League.
