NFL WR salaries: What’s next after Justin Jefferson’s contract
Last Monday, both rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy and Vikings fans received the news they had been waiting for all offseason: Justin Jefferson is not leaving. After an offseason of conjecture, the three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver agreed to a four-year, $140 million contract extension that would keep him in purple and gold for years to come. Since the announcement, there has been a lot of discussion concerning this arrangement. Yes, $35 million per year is a large sum of money, but there has also been speculation about what it means for the league as a whole.
Is it a new era for top wide receivers? Are the top stars being paid too much? Should the Vikings have traded Jefferson and picked a wide receiver to replace him? Should they have waited for CeeDee Lamb or Ja’Marr Chase, two more top wideouts who are up for extensions, to sign first? Will wide receivers be the next running backs, if teams decide to spend less on the position?
My responses to those questions are generally negative, but there are plenty of subjects to discuss regarding Jefferson’s contract, what it implies for both the Vikings and the rest of the league, and where wide receiver sits in the NFL landscape. In an in-depth look at this trade and the market at the league’s most explosive position, I’ll address as many of those themes and questions as possible.
