Ipswich Town and Sheffield United compete to sign top-tier winger.

According to the Scottish Daily Mail (10/06/24, pg67), Ipswich Town and Sheffield United are among the clubs interested in signing Rangers forward Tom Lawrence. Ipswich Town are preparing for their first year back in the Premier League after being promoted last season.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, is preparing for another year in the Championship after being relegated from the top division last season.

Both clubs are so close, yet so far different in what they are currently attempting to accomplish. Ipswich Town have been on the rise for numerous years, whilst the Blades have struggled to maintain long-term stability across seasons. However, they are both aiming for the same man this summer. Lawrence, 30, played 32 games for the Rangers in all competitions last season.

During the 2023/24 season, the dynamic winger recorded three goals and three assists. The Scottish Daily Mail reported in print this morning (June 10th) that Ipswich Town and Sheffield United are interested in signing the attacker this summer. They are both joined by Besiktas, which is likewise monitoring the situation.
A tough one for the Blades
Tempting Lawrence to Bramall Lane may be a hard job this summer. Ipswich Town can offer Premier League football, whilst Besiktas again offers the chance to play top flight football in Turkey, as well as the chance to play in Europe and reunite with former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Chris Wilder knows what it takes to get a club promoted to the top flight and keep them there. However, his recent track record suggest his methods may not work the same way now.

Top flight quality?

Lawrence, 30, has never made a significant impact in a top flight during his career. His best seasons have come in the Championship, and Sheffield United may be the ideal fit for him. There are serious doubts about whether he can deliver for Kieran McKenna in the top league, and the versatile forward will undoubtedly want to play regular football. Lawrence has 50 goals and 40 assists in 269 Championship games since 2013/14. His time with the Rangers wasn’t ideal, but if he can regain his form, he might be an important addition to the Blades this summer.
