After spending £75.8 to join Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen, Kai Havertz said, “I always need a bit of time.”

Kai Havertz opens up about issues at Chelsea after the transfer from LeverkusenAfter moving from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea in 2020, Kai Havertz, a star player for Arsenal now, talks about his difficult time there.

Havertz attracted the interest of the Blues because he was an important part of Leverkusen’s senior squad before he joined Chelsea.

His 18 goals and nine assists in 45 games throughout the 2019–20 season are just a few examples of his outstanding display of consistency for the German team.

When the offensive midfielder arrived from Leverkusen for £75.8 million, Chelsea had higher expectations for him.

The German international, nevertheless, found it difficult to live up to those expectations as he took some time to adjust. Havertz’s first season with the Blues ended with just nine goals and six assists in 45 games.

While he was at Chelsea for three years, he never lived up to the expectations or his prior form from Leverkusen, so it’s not like he lacked time to adjust.

The German chose to stay with Chelsea after the 2022–2023 season and signed a £65 million contract to join Arsenal.

Havertz discussed his troubles at Chelsea in an interview with the German publication Welt Am Sonntag (via Football London). Says he:

“I’m a person who needs time when I get into a new environment. I’m shy at first, a bit reserved, and not someone who comes out of my shell straight away.

I always need a bit of time at the beginning and have to warm up to people – that was also the case after my move from [Bayer] Leverkusen to Chelsea. Once that happens, everything falls into place.”

Chelsea has never been particularly patient when it comes to outcomes.

Their high-profile signing did not immediately bring out the best in him, and after three years with the Blues, they let him go. However, the Gunners were fortunate in their choice of action.

For Arsenal, Havertz established himself as a key member in his debut season, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists in only 37 appearances in the Premier League.

Chelsea has always had numerous changes within the team, including personnel and management changes. It is definitely difficult for a new player to adjust right away in such a dynamic atmosphere.

In only his first season with the Gunners, Havertz guided them to finish as runners-up, just two points behind the winners, Manchester City, while Chelsea placed sixth in the Premier League rankings this year.
