The Cowboys should sign CeeDee Lamb ahead of Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys and the rest of the NFL are in the process of preparing for the upcoming season. Veterans are getting back into the swing of things, while rookies are adjusting to their new surroundings. its 2024 draft class is present and accounted for, but the same cannot be said about its veterans. So far, two key players have elected not to participate in OTAs. I know, Darren Hambrick would ask, “What does voluntary mean?” However, the absence of a few superstars from the team is significant.

WR CeeDee Lamb has failed to arrive, while EDGE Micah Parsons attended one practice before deciding he did not want to participate in any future voluntary workouts. For a team that appeared disoriented in an embarrassing 16-point loss at home to the 7th-seeded Green Bay Packers, you’d think all players would be eager to return and begin working to avenge the loss.

Sometimes business gets in the middle of what we all believe players should do. And I understand OTAs are voluntary, but HC Mike McCarthy’s comments on Parsons’ absence may have misled us. McCarthy used politically correct language, but the undertone was one of rage and annoyance at his best defensive player’s decision to withdraw from the squad after only one session.

While Parsons’ absence isn’t contract-related, stalled negotiations are what is keeping Lamb away, and Dak Prescott could use the same excuse but the leader of the team has put on his bravest face.

The 2023 season showed the world that Cedarian Lamb has fully arrived and is here to stay as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.

Lamb set Cowboys’ single-season franchise records for receptions (135) and yards (1,749) on his way to his first 1st-team All-Pro selection.

The Cowboys could have extended Lamb last season after his third consecutive season of improvement and Lamb’s 2022 season proved to be just a stepping stone to his ascension into a superstar.

Dallas gambled and lost on his contract, and now they must pay what many believe would be more than $30 million per year. Lamb and Vikings star WR Justin Jefferson do not have the same agent, but their representatives work for the same agency. They are both waiting to see which contract the other will receive, but they are at an impasse. The problem is that other clubs are offering agreements to their wide receivers, driving up market prices with each signing.

Miami’s Jaylen Waddle is the latest to sign, agreeing to a three-year, $84.75 million contract for more than $28 million a season. At this rate, Lamb may expect to get between $32 million and $35 million every year. Where he lands in that category is determined by how long it takes the Cowboys to extend him. When it comes to these discussions, only two parties are directly involved (the player and agent versus the team), but other considerations also play a role.
