The former Ibrox star has been assessing the squad’s needs ahead of a rebuildRangers need to hold onto James Tavernier and Jack Butland while they rebuild, according to Kenny Miller.
In an effort to assemble a team that can wrest the championship away from Celtic, Philippe Clement will make significant roster changes this summer. In addition to Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, Jon McLaughlin, Kemar Roofe, and John Lundstram being confirmed as free agents yesterday, Brazlian left-back Jefte has already signed.
There will be other players leaving, but Miller does not want to lose the starting defense tandem.
Butland may draw interest once more given that Nottingham Forest made an offer for him in January and there are rumors that Steven Gerrard is eyeing Tavernier and Connor Goldson for his Al-Ettifaq team in Saudi Arabia.
The dependable goalie and captain must be held onto, according to the former Ibrox striker.
“There has to be a core and a spine if you’re talking about building a new-look side,” he said to the Daily Record. In my opinion, Jack Butland is crucial to it.
Forget about his error in the Scottish Cup Final; the goalie has been excellent ever since coming on board.
It is inevitable that this summer will see bids made for him. In addition, Clement may need to accept a huge offer in order to pay for his other expenses.
However, he would want to maintain Butland, and I believe it is essential that he be ranked #1 for the upcoming season.
James Tavernier, the captain, would be the next person I would like to keep after Butland.
It’s no secret that I adore him, and even with some of the criticism he’s received, you can’t argue with the goals and assists he will continue to provide the team.
He still has two years left on his deal, so unless a significant offer is received, I anticipate him leading Clement’s team once more.”
Miller has identified the striking department as the most crucial area for quality recruits. He believes they trailed Celtic too far in that regard and doesn’t think Clement can move on with Danilo and Cyriel Dessers as his only choices.
He went on, “I think he would do it right away if he could get Oscar Cortes and Abdallah Sima back on season-long loan deals.” Fixing Rangers’ attacking third with that would be very beneficial.
And this summer, I believe that having a striker is imperative. In my opinion, the manager’s primary responsibility for the summer is to attend to this. Since, when compared to Celtic’s forward line, it was just not good enough last season.
Danilo and Cyriel Dessers are the two primary center forwards now that Roofe has moved on. Clement needs to sign a new No. 9 immediately. If he wanted to strengthen his title bid, he should have done it in January.
But, I don’t think Dessers and Danilo will be content to play backup roles if he does bring in a new striker, be it Lawrence Shankland of Hearts or someone else.
Most likely, the manager would try to move one of them on. Dessers will likely get greater attention following his recent 23-goal season.”
