Kenny Miller feels Philippe Clement may struggle in the summer transfer window if he sells too many Rangers players. After losing the Scottish Cup and the Premiership title to Celtic, the Belgian has a lot to do this summer to turn things around.
This has already started, with John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, and Ryan Jack all leaving when their contracts expire this month. Miller, writing for the Daily Record on June 2, said that while some sales are inevitable, they must be done within reason if the Gers are to challenge. He stated: “Rangers must identify clubs interested in people who are surplus to requirements. What if not? Clement might be stuck with them, which could be a major issue.
He can’t get rid of the entire playing roster in one summer. But he’ll already know which guys he can trust and create a new team around. Rangers’ summer departures have begun. On Saturday (1 June), the Gers confirmed on its retained list that numerous first-team players will be leaving Ibrox when their contracts expired.
Kemar Roofe and Jon McLaughlin have joined Lundstram, Barisic and Jack in leaving Rangers this summer leaving plenty of gaps in the squad.
Add to this Fabio Silva, Abdallah Sima and Oscar Cortes returning to their parent clubs after a loan spell in the Scottish Premiership.
Looking ahead to the summer transfer window, Clement is going to have to add plenty of talent to his squad to fill the void left.
His goal for next season will be to defeat Celtic and fight for the league title while also improving in the Scottish Cup. With all of the exits now secured, Clement will have to ensure that he has replacement possibilities lined up before any additional sells.
