Rangers vs Jose Mourinho: Fenerbahce’s transfer puts them on collision path
Rangers might be in a Champions League showdown with Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese manager is likely to return to the dugout with Turkish giants Fenerbahce. He has apparently agreed to a two-year contract to take control in Istanbul, just as former Ibrox hero Ryan Kent prepares to leave after a disastrous tenure. Mourinho will lead Fener’s charge next season when he returns to coaching after being fired by Roma at the end of the previous season. It has also opened up the possibility of a face-off against Philippe Clement. Rangers finished second in the Scottish Premiership as their title bid stalled in the final few weeks. If they wish to join Celtic, they will have to go through the Champions League qualifying stages.
They could still overcome some difficult opponents, like Fenerbahce. They begin in the first qualifying round, where they are seeded with Dynamo Kyiv, and will face either Partizan Belgrade or Swiss side Lugano. If you win that tie, you’ll advance to the next round against Rangers.
Crucially, the Turks will not be seeded, thus Mourinho might be at Ibrox if the clubs are placed together. FC Twente and longtime rivals Union St Gilloise are potential options. Slavia Prague, RB Salzburg, and Lille are the remaining seeded teams in the draw.
