Mike Zimmer points out something unique about the Cowboys’ defense he has never experienced before

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for their debut season under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, but he was startled by one thing since his arrival. After Dan Quinn accepted the position of head coach with the Washington Commanders, America’s Team opted to rejoin with their old DC, Mike Zimmer.

Quinn moved to their NFC East opponent, and we’ll face off against his former team twice in 2024. However, he will need to try to gain an advantage over his successor in what may be a defensive chess match. Zimmer joins the Cowboys on a one-year agreement, his first NFL position after the Vikings. Zimmer was most recently the Minnesota Vikings’ head coach in 2021, although he elected to return to collegiate football for two years after being fired. The 67-year-old coach signed a one-year contract to replace the departing Quinn and take over DC.

Zimmer spent 13 years with the Dallas Cowboys from 1994 to 2006, so he will remember one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history. He began his career as a defensive assistant for the Dallas Cowboys and was the team’s defensive coordinator until he moved to Atlanta. The Dallas Cowboys have lost important defensive players during their free agency exile. Despite losing important defensive mainstays Dorance Armstrong and nickel tackle Johnathan Hankins to free agency, America’s Team boasts a terrific core of players.

Zimmer’s roster will include generational prospect Micah Parsons, standout cornerback Trevon Diggs, fresh rookie talent Marshawn Kneeland, and many more. The returning Cowboy will have been there at the OTAs and has already begun teaching his players the schemes and playstyles for the next season. Mike Zimmer identifies the uncommon thing he has experienced as the Dallas DC. In his most recent interview with ESPN reporter Todd Archer, Zimmer admitted that he has been surprised by one thing since his arrival. “It’s like I told the defense the first day I was here. I said, “This is a different deal for me.” Usually when I come in, the defense is poor. Do you know? Zimmer explained, “They’re pretty darn good.”
