Mike McCarthy: Trey Lance is close to mastering the Cowboys’ system.

After starting only 17 games at North Dakota State, the 49ers selected Trey Lance with the third overall choice in the draft. They then traded him to the Cowboys after only four starts in San Francisco. Lance never played a down in his first year with the Cowboys, thus there isn’t much to base his evaluation on.

However, coach Mike McCarthy likes what he sees this offseason. McCarthy said Lance is “definitely” a better quarterback than he was when he arrived in Dallas last year, and that his work in understanding the Cowboys’ scheme has been tremendous. “He needs as many reps as he can.”

“Young quarterback comes into a new system, so you got the learning curve, but now starting to get the timing with the routes,” McCarthy stated. “He’s close to mastering the system. He has a really excellent understanding. He communicates really well. He appears to be getting increasingly comfortable. He only needs repetitions. I realize I say that every time I talk about him.

He just needs as many repetitions as possible.” Lance is unlikely to make an impact in Dallas, since he is behind both Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush on the depth chart. However, all he can do now is put Lance may eventually earn some meaningful playing time.
