Proposed Rangers 24/25 squad likely to make very nervous transfer reading for Ibrox fans
But the issue on everyone’s mind at Rangers is how much change is needed to transform this squad from chumps to champions. With six players out of contract, fans’ patience wearing thin, and a non-existent player trading model keeping the club’s transfer engine running on fumes, everything is up in the air. But don’t be afraid! In one of those stories that will appear ridiculous in a few days, if not weeks, we’ve decided to look at how the Rangers roster might look come September 1st.
Rangers will undergo changes during the transfer window. Our fearless commander, Philippe Clement, has already told us this.
And, as upset as Rangers fans may be right now, the talk about transfers in and out of the club does not help matters.
Rangers linked with eight new signings
There are no fewer than eight players being prominently targeted by Rangers in the press. Leading writer Chris Jack earlier suggested that up to a dozen footballers might join the club this summer. If we add Abdallah Sima and Oscar Cortes to the list of loan targets, we’ll have 14 total. But with only eight names, we’re not certain we’re transitioning from a position of weakness to one of strength. Rangers will add Liam Kelly (Motherwell), Jefte (Fluminense), Thomas Galdames (Godoy Cruz), Relebohile Mofokeng (Orlando Pirates), Adama Traore (Ferencvaros), Abdallah Sima (Brighton), Oscar Cortes (RC Lens), and Albion Rrahmani (Rapid Bucharest) to their squad this summer, assuming that every serious transfer link so far is followed through.
Eight could also reportedly quit Rangers
All this transfer activity is likely to follow a string of high profile exits.
Now, just how radical Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen go here is still to be defined but one thing is clear.
Rangers fans are sick and tired of falling short in the fight with Celtic and are eager for symbolic change.
With Borna Barisic, John Lundstram and Kemar Roofe heading out the Ibrox exit door, wages are to be freed up and big decisions are to be taken.Ryan Jack and Leon Balogun are also out of contract, with the Nigerian apparently being offered a new deal, and Jon McLaughlin will depart the club this summer. Other verified names include Portuguese wide player Fabio Silva, who was unable to modify his social media profile quickly enough after leaving Rangers. There is also a high-profile debate concerning Saudi ties to Rangers executives James Tavernier and Connor Goldson. For the purposes of this experiment, let us assume they depart.

Transfer conundrum for Clement
There are a couple of big issues we see with this proposed squad as things stand.
Firstly, the exits of Ryan Jack and John Lundstram in particular leave gaping holes in midfield.
Whilst Jack has been consistently battling injury, John Lundstram played a quite ridiculous 53 games for the club this season and we may need two players to replace him.
You can say anything you want about the Scouser, but the way we handled Lundstram’s contract problem was a huge mistake. No wonder Clement is unhappy. A Lundstram leave means that even if we sign the players we’ve been linked to, we’ll need to add significant experience, talent, and athleticism to the middle of the park. Furthermore, the possibility of Connor Goldson and James Tavernier leaving the club this summer, together with Jack and Lundstram, appears to be harmful to our cause. It takes a lot of experience out of the dressing room, and I don’t think it’s a good decision for Rangers.
There is also a notable dearth of quality homegrown options in the planned roster, with Liam Kelly, John Souttar, and Scott Wright being the only senior players. The team includes Academy products Adam Devine, Leon King, and Ross McCausland. Rangers are expected to consider some experienced homegrown possibilities ahead of the summer transfer window. As previously said, the linkages and names might change in an instant; consider the situation with Jose Cordoba.
