Jose Cordoba to Rangers OFF amid transfer soap opera as Thomas Galdames enters the mix

Rangers have ended their interest in Jose Cordoba as the Ibrox side pulled the plug on a deal for the £3m defender – with left-sided South American Thomas Galdames linked. The Panama defender had been strongly linked with a move to Ibrox, although there was also fierce competition from Norwich, who are set to appoint Nordsjaelland manager Johannes Hoff Thorup as their new boss.

Cordoba was expected to cost around £3million and he’d already been given a guided tour of Rangers’ facilities on a visit to Glasgow where he took in a match against Kilmarnock. The Rangers Review state no deal will take place – and it comes after a report in Bulgaria stated the goalposts had moved.

He will be in their squad for two World Cup qualifiers against Guyana and Montserrat next month before the Copa America starts. Panama will play Uruguay, hosts USA and Bolivia in the group stage and any delay until after the event and Levski Sofia will stand tall to other suitors after Rangers departed the competition. A spokeswoman for Levski is quoted in Bulgaria’s ‘Telegraph’ publication as saying: “We are confident that Jose’s participation in the Copa America event will increase his value. There he will appear on a massive stage that will be seen from all over the world.

Meanwhile, Rangers have been linked with a transfer for Chilean defender Thomas Galdames, who will play his final game for Argentine club Godoy Cruz this week. The Ibrox club is preparing to start on a major rebuilding project ahead of the new season after losing both the league and the Scottish Cup to Celtic. Manager Philippe Clement has already completed his first signing of the summer after sealing the acquisition of Brazilian full defender Jefte.

And reports in South America have claimed Rangers have targeted left-sided defender Galdames and are favourites to land the 25-year-old, who could be set to play his final match for the club in this week’s Copa Argentina tie against El Porvenir. Galdames has only six months left of his contract and would be available for a cut-price fee if signed during this transfer window.

He was named in Chile’s squad for the first time for their friendly next month with Paraguay and in the preliminary squad for the Copa American tournament. Galdames is the son of former Chile international Pablo and his father predicted last week that the stopper is ready for a move to Europe.

He stated, “I am not just saying this because he is my son; he knows I am his hardest critic, but Thomas has improved so much recently, both physically and football-wise. He was chosen to Argentina’s Team of the Year, which was a significant milestone for him. He is playing at a high level, and he must now consider taking the next step to Europe.
