Rangers’ out-of-contract star’s future has been determined, amid a frenzy of transfer activity.
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has given Leon Balogun’s wish by extending his contract for another year, according to sources. The experienced defender is claimed to have persuaded manager Philippe Clement to extend his contract after a succession of outstanding performances at the heart of the Light Blues’ backline in the second part of the season.
The 35-year-old returned to Ibrox last summer for a second tenure after spending a year with EFL Championship club QPR. Balogun expressed his desire to extend his Gers career following Saturday’s Scottish Cup final defeat to Celtic, and it looks that wish has been granted.
The Nigerian international was expected to join a slew of other out-of-contract players leaving this summer as Clement begins his end-of-season squad reshuffle. However, according to the Scottish Sun, Balogun’s efforts impressed his management, who has already signed a contract to keep him with the club for next season.
It will be a really exciting era for us to make the appropriate judgments for next season as well. To observe how everyone trains, plays, behaves, works, and demonstrates perseverance in the coming weeks, because you want to be successful with this club, and we need the right players in the building.”
Balogun will now seek to be included in Rangers’ European roster next season, having been left out of the group by previous manager Michael Beale at the start of the campaign. Clement is looking to enhance his central defense options before the transfer window opens next month, with Levski Sofia’s Jose Cordoba at the top of the Belgian’s summer wishlist.
They now have regular starters John Souttar and Connor Goldson on the roster, as well as periphery players Ben Davies and Leon King, but at least one of them is anticipated to go.
