Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor will rekindle his battle with the Celtic great on the Hampden gantry when he joins the esteemed punditry squad.

The 42-year-old legendary former goalkeeper has been quiet since hanging up his gloves.

When it came to interviews, he rarely said much and, on the rare occasions that he did turn to face the camera, it generally concluded with him making a little amount of jokes.

Thus, it’s understandable why armchair Rangers supporters are eager to witness Allan McGregor’s reaction when he makes his punditry debut on Premier Sports during this Saturday’s Scottish Cup final, especially because Scott Brown, his former opponent, will also be accompanying him.

For the better part of fifteen years, the two were bitter rivals on opposing sides of the Old Firm divide. However, instead of sharing the field, Hampden will host the season finale between their old clubs.

The starting lineup for Premier Sports featured former Scotland teammates Brown and McGregor.

Alan Hutton, McGregor’s close friend and former Ibrox teammate, is also on the team, and Neil Lennon, Brown’s former Celtic manager, joined after he was just appointed Rapid Bucharest manager.

Even though Brown and McGregor were bitter opponents, they still respected one another. In McGregor’s first season back at Ibrox under Steven Gerrard, the team defeated Rangers at Parkhead in 2018.

Brown remarked afterwards, “We played well and could have scored a few more goals had it not been for Allan McGregor – I thought he was terrific today.”

During his second stint at Rangers, McGregor was reluctant to interact with the media, but when he did, he was direct.

After a 1-1 tie against Hamilton Accies in 2021, he was quoted by Sky Sports as saying, “Rubbish” in regards to their performance. We were, in my opinion, the poorest team I’ve ever seen for the majority of the game.

And when he played it down, saying, “It’s just one of these things,” after making a fantastic save against Slavia Prague in the Europa League, his fans went into a frenzy.

You respond to it, observe it, extend your hand, and ideally it stays outside. It was never such a happy day.”

As Premier Sports announced their lineup, fans speculated that they would be in for a treat: “Might hinge on whether McGregor is in a chatty mood.”
