Watch These Players From The Pittsburgh Steelers During Training Camp as They Battle For A Spot On The Team .
We will soon receive a glimpse of the Pittsburgh Steelers roster as formal OTAs get begun.
Naturally, experienced players with high aspirations or established veterans have already secured the majority of the roster positions.
There’s always a chance that a few surprise guys can impress during training camp and secure a spot on the team.
Three unheralded guys that have a remote chance of making the Steelers team are listed below.
Three Surprise Players Who Could Make Pittsburgh Steelers Roster
Rodney Williams
The first player on this list is one who played well for Pittsburgh in his limited role the previous season. With just 55 total offensive snaps, he played no part in the Steelers offense.
But the tight end was able to establish a place for himself on special teams. Williams showed a strong drive in every aspect of special teams play while recording six tackles.
Williams was inches away from scoring on a blocked punt that rolled out of the end zone, but his hustle kept him from scoring a touchdown.
The Steelers’ decision on whether to carry an additional blocking tight end or prioritize special teams play will determine Williams’ chances of making the roster.
MyCole Pruitt, who played for Arthur Smith with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons, was signed by them during the summer.
Smith will want to run the ball as much as possible, and Pruitt’s outstanding blocking abilities will come in very handy. However, Darnell Washington, a good blocking tight end, already plays for Pittsburgh.
They may also be willing to give Williams a roster spot because they lost two important special teams players in James Pierre and Myles Boykin this offseason.
Trenton Thompson
Due to injuries sustained by their secondary players the previous season, the Steelers’ roster included a number of inexperienced safeties who saw excessive playing time.
Trenton Thompson was the most productive player in the grab bag group. In addition to being a bigger-framed safety who can play in the box, he has demonstrated excellent playmaking skills.
Before sustaining a season-ending injury, Thompson finished with 22 tackles, three passes defensed, and one interception in six games.
The Steelers could be secure after acquiring DeShon Elliott in free agency and having Demontae Kazee return from an injury. Elliott, Kazee, and Miles Killebrew—who will be retained for his special teams contributions—shall be joined by Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Thompson will force them to make a difficult choice, even though they are unlikely to retain a fifth safety.
He has a great chance of making the Steelers team thanks to his versatility and playmaking abilities from the previous season.
Breiden Fehoko
Breiden Fehoko was not on the field at all during his 2023 season with the Steelers, whether he was on the active roster or the practice squad.
Given Pittsburgh’s struggles all season long with stopping the run and lack of depth on the defensive line, it was unexpected that Fehoko never took a snap.
Fehoko isn’t much of a pass rusher, but he can stuff the run with his nose tackle ability.
Given the major doubts surrounding their defensive line, Pittsburgh may try to retain Fehoko because of his background. There are some of their other depth alternatives with very few or no NFL reps.
Breiden Fehoko won’t be a starting player every game, but he could have a strong training camp and earn a position as an important backup.
