Cambuslang Rangers’ manager fears that ‘big-spending’ clubs may block promotion push.
Cambuslang Rangers manager Paul McColl believes big-spending teams are “ruining the game” and may hinder a quick return to the West of Scotland First Division. The Wee Gers were demoted this season because Maybole did enough to keep their status, and McColl believes it will be difficult to climb back out of the Second Division. However, he has signed 18-year-old attacker Godson Nechi to a new contract and expects to retain 50% of last season’s squad as Cambuslang Rangers effectively rebuild from scratch.McColl said: “It’s normal to say that you want to go straight back up, but it’s not as easy as it sounds or looks.
Two other good teams have gone down [Whitletts Vics and Neilston], while some new teams have emerged. “All of these teams are catching up; they’re all paying well and getting better setups and so on.
Once you start paying a bit of money, players will come to you. Money is ruining the game, probably eight out of 10 teams now pay good money.
If you give a guy a tenner and other clubs can offer £60, you know where he’ll go. “We’re down a tier, so last year we could definitely get Premier League players to the First, but getting them to the Second will be difficult.
There are a few that will sign again, there are a few that will move on, and some of the guys who are good players will probably still think they’re better than that division – but they took us down.
“But Godson Nechi has signed up again, and there will be a few others who will re-sign as well.
“There will be some this week that I’m meeting, and there are quite a few who are definitely leaving, a few maybe want to go to a higher level, and some who aren’t going to stay here.”
McColl added: “It’s a chance for us to take a step back and a wee breather, and to start again.
“We’re down a league now, the money’s probably quite similar, with the likes of Larkhall Thistle, St Anthony’s and teams that are closer to us.
“We were out-gunned last season by clubs who were spending quite a lot of money and it’s difficult to match that.”It wasn’t a terrific season, but everyone made mistakes, including me, the coaches, and the players. SIMILAR
“The aim is to keep half the players, get others in, and start again, start fresh, and learn from the mistakes of last year.”It will be difficult to get out of that league. Hopefully, we can find a team that will assist us try our best to get out of it.”
