The last two offseasons, the Chicago Bears have owned the top pick in the NFL Draft. When the Bears traded down and selected an offensive tackle in the 2023 draft, Justin Fields was aware of his status with the team. Things were different this year.
In 2024, the Bears held onto the first overall pick, which they used to draft USC quarterback Caleb Williams. In March, the Bears traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers to make room for Williams.
For the first time since the trade, Fields spoke to Pittsburgh media on Tuesday. Based on what he learned from his exit interview with the Bears at the end of the season, he said he wasn’t taken aback by the trade or by the fact that he was in Italy and just getting ready to eat dinner when he learned of it.
Fields told reporters that “it wasn’t really a shock,” according to The Athletic. “I knew what was going to happen beforehand.” In an attempt to cap off an uneventful farewell to his Chicago days, Fields complimented the Bears on their handling of the trade.
“There (were) a lot of ups and downs, but all in all, I appreciate every relationship that I built, all my teammates,” Fields stated on ESPN.com. “They know that (I have) nothing but love for the city, for the fans and for my old teammates and coaches.”
Fields stated to journalists that “it wasn’t really a shock,” as The Athletic reports. “I knew what was going to happen beforehand.” To try to put the finishing touches on a forgettable farewell to his Chicago days, Fields gave the Bears credit for their trade management. “There (were) a lot of ups and downs, but all in all, I appreciate every relationship that I built, all my teammates,” Fields said on ESPN.com. “They know that (I have) nothing but love for the city, for the fans and for my old teammates and coaches.”
Fields isn’t, however, merely letting fate have its way. He’s attempting to deprive Wilson of the starting position. According to Fields, “I’m definitely competing,” on Tuesday. “Russ probably knows that. We are in daily competition with one another. We push each other, which helps me get better. “I don’t think of myself as a seated person all year. I’m putting my all into it every day when I come in. encouraging him to reach his full potential and encouraging me to do the same every single day.” Head coach of the Steelers, Mike Tomlin, expressed his satisfaction with the QB pair thus far, highlighting their leadership qualities in particular.
They’re pros, so while I’m happy about it, I’m not shocked by it, Tomlin stated on Tuesday, according to ESPN.com. “That’s where there’s an expectation. You could say that both of these people have been franchise-like. I’m thrilled that we will be getting it since they have already donned the role of being that person for a franchise as they get out of their cars in the morning.
