The official season total for 2023 Wolves’ summer target is 58 goals and assists.

Ultimately, Wolves’ goal-scoring problems in 2023–24 were minor, but the team still lost out on a player who has been an absolute monster in front of goal this year.

The ability to put the ball in the net is one of Wolves’ main problems since joining the Premier League again.

Under Nuno Espirito Santo and Bruno Lage, goals were not abundant, and during Julen Lopetegui’s brief tenure at Molineux, the net didn’t ripple too much.

Nevertheless, Gary O’Neil did manage to solve this issue to some extent, as Wolves scored 50 goals in the league in 2023–2024.

There were 19 more than in the previous season. With 12 goals apiece in the league, Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan were the primary providers of goals.

However, considering that Viktor Gyokeres recently concluded an incredible season at Sporting CP, one has to question if Wolves could have been even more formidable had they been able to sign him last summer.

Previous target for Wolves With Sporting CP, Viktor Gyokeres scores 43 goals and provides 15 assists in his debut season.

Gyokeres scored 22 goals for Coventry City during his incredibly productive 2022–2023 season, which helped the team advance to the Championship play-offs.

To his regret, Coventry lost to Luton Town at the last hurdle and had to settle for the Championship. Gyokeres, however, was quickly signed by Sporting CP, and what a bargain he has turned out to be.

Considering his achievements for Coventry, it was thought that the Sweden international would do fairly well.

But the numbers he has really posted are beyond anyone’s imagination. Gyokeres has scored an astounding forty-three goals in 49 games in all competitions. In addition, he has demonstrated his creative side by tabling 15 assists.

His efforts aided Sporting in winning the league, and if they defeat FC Porto in Sunday’s Taça de Portugal, Ruben Amorim’s team may win both titles.

How close did Wolves come to signing Gyokeres?

It’s hard not to consider what might have been for Wolves after Gyokeres’ incredible campaign in Portugal. According to reports from last summer, Wanderers had a chance to land the star in first place.

It seemed the club had set him as its top objective. Although Sporting was already involved, reports on June 22 indicated that Wolves was still pursuing the youngster.

Gyokeres joined Sporting on July 13 and, in his first interview with the squad, stated that Wolves was one of his other alternatives, but that Sporting was the team that was most interested in him. Gyokeres is 25 years old. However, there were never any formal reports of Wanderers making an offer.

The club was suffering financial issues at the time, as everyone is aware. It is quite unfortunate that Wolves were unable to sign Gyokeres, as Dave Edwards likened him to Raul Jimenez. Gyokeres is currently among the top scorers in Europe.

Naturally, if he had signed with Wolves and competed in the Premier League, he probably would not have scored as many goals. However, it appears from his Sporting 2023–2024 record that Wanderers lost out on him as a player.
