Lions’ dominance on PFF’s young talent list demonstrates Brad Holmes’ brilliance once more.

The fact that the Detroit Lions were well-represented among the best players under 25 on the Pro Football Focus list is evidence of how successful Brad Holmes has been in restructuring the squad.

The Detroit Lions have quickly rebuilt their roster, and their impressive on-field performance is proof that the changes made are effective. Zoltan Buday of Pro Football Focus kicked off the new week with a list of the top 25 NFL players under 25. Penei Sewell of the Lions, a right tackle, is ranked first on the list.

Despite having spent three seasons as an NFL player, Sewell is just twenty-three years old, and he won’t turn twenty-four until October. He is headed toward being the league’s top offensive lineman with 3,359 regular-season snaps, which ranks second among all players over the last three seasons. The Oregonian led all NFL offensive linemen in 2023 with his 92.8 PFF overall score and 95.1 PFF run-blocking grade.

A defensive end for the Lions named Aidan Hutchinson came in at number six. In his first campaign in 2022, Hutchinson showed promise, but in 2023 he elevated his play to a completely new level.

Only four players—Myles Garrett, Micah Parsons, Nick Bosa, and T.J. Watt—were below him with a 91.2 PFF pass-rushing grade, which put him in fifth place. In the regular season, Hutchinson had the second-most pressures of any edge defender with 110 in total.

The Lions had the most players on the list from a single team (five) thanks to Amon-Ra St. Brown (No. 11), Sam LaPorta (No. 19), and Jahmyr Gibbs (No. 21). However, they had no other players in the top 10. PFF list demonstrates the main ways Brad Holmes has improved the Lions’ roster.

The Lions would never have had a player, much less five and the top player on the list, on a list like this in the past. Here’s just one more example of Brad Holmes’ excellent performance in the draft, in case we needed it.

Over the course of his first three drafts as general manager of the Lions, he brought in five key players at five different positions.

Success is sustained by keeping a pipeline of young talent open, and Holmes has recently done a better job of it than any other general manager in the league.
