Former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas has been named as a logical match for the Dallas Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys have a need for a wide receiver. While CeeDee Lamb is one of the best wide receivers in the game, he is not enough. In today’s day and age, you can’t just have one dominant receiver on offense; you have to have multiple players capable of making an impact, and simply put, Lamb alone isn’t enough. Additionally, Lamb did not show up to voluntary workouts because he is in the middle of contract negotiations with the team.

Cooks improved slightly in the second part of last season, but he certainly has passed his prime in the NFL. Nonetheless, he is solid, as previously stated. After that, the talk becomes somewhat uncomfortable. Jalen Tolbert is currently the team’s WR3, which is a somewhat troubling truth. Tolbert enters his third season in 2024, and while he improved from his debut season the previous year, that isn’t saying much. The Cowboys did use one of their early picks on wide receiver Ryan Flournoy, but the broader point is that they could need some help.

Former Saints WR Michael Thomas named as logical fit for Cowboys
Given that we are a stone’s throw from Memorial Day, there are obviously not a lot of options on the open market at any position. That is simply where we are at in the NFL schedule.
Dallas isn’t in a grave scenario, but having additional hands on deck might be extremely beneficial considering the big question marks on the depth chart following Brandin Cooks. ESPN recently connected certain free agents to areas that made sense to them, and they chose the Dallas Cowboys for former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.

Dallas Cowboys have the best team fit. When Thomas is healthy, he can continue to expose and work different levels of the field. However, the injury fears are legitimate, as the 31-year-old wide receiver has appeared in only 20 games over the last four seasons. And, while Thomas might wait until after camps begin to locate the best landing location, consider Dallas as an option; he could make a difference there on a one-year contract. In Mike McCarthy’s scheme, Thomas might fight with Jalen Tolbert for the No. 3 spot, alongside CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. He could form a boundary X and demonstrate his ability to work the seams out of the slot. He caught 39 catches in 2023, totaling 448 yards and a touchdown.

Thomas first entered the NFL in 2016 and immediately took the league by storm. New Orleans was experiencing the final seasons of Drew Brees at quarterback and he capitalized on all of the talents within Thomas, so much so that the wide receiver led the league in receptions in both 2018 and 2019. He also led the league in receiving yards in 2019, to.

However, since then, everything has changed dramatically. Thomas appeared in five games in 2020, skipped the entire 2021 season, played three times in 2021, and returned for seven games last year. Here’s what our pals at Canal Street Chronicles wrote about Thomas in January, when they were speculating (right) whether the Saints would release him this offseason:
The biggest problem and the unavoidable issue looming over “Can’t Guard Mike’s” remaining career in New Orleans is the obvious, his health. The wideout is going into his 10th NFL season and still under contract with the Black and Gold, as he is due a $1.2M base salary for the 2024-25 season. In addition to this being his last of a 5-year deal he signed in 2019, the emergence of young budding stars Chris Olave, All-Pro/Pro Bowler Rasheed Shaheed and rookie A.T. Perry make it extremely interesting for Thomas’ position within the wide receiver room. I do believe, with all that being said, he supplies a great amount of leadership and veteran presence that would provide value to the team.

We’ve passed the point where any veteran addition could be viewed as impeding CeeDee Lamb’s rise to the top of the group; the fact that Dallas traded for Brandin Cooks last season (a former Saints wide receiver himself) is enough evidence of that, so Thomas does not appear to be a threat there in any capacity.
