The Rangers manager requests’very correct’ VAR calls in the cup final.

After Rangers was denied a penalty in their 3-3 draw with Hearts at Tynecastle, Philippe Clement voiced optimism today that VAR would make “very correct” judgments in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup final against Celtic.

The Ibrox club’s unlikely bid to win the Scottish championship came to an end on Wednesday night as Celtic defeated Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, moving six points clear of them with one game still to play. Their perfect Premiership campaign came to an unsatisfactory conclusion in Gorgie.

After taking a 3-1 lead in the second half with goals from Todd Cantwell, Fabio Silva, and Ross McCausland, James Tavernier and his teammates gave up a two goal lead in the latter moments of the game and were held to a 3-3 draw.

When Hearts center half Frankie Kent tugged on Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers’ jersey in the hosts’ six-yard box, Clement said that he was disappointed that referee Don Robertson and VAR official David Dickinson did not give the visitors a spot kick early on.

At Hampden a week from today, his troops can clinch a cup double if they defeat their city rivals for the first time this term. The Belgian is certain that the match referees will make the correct calls in the final.

There was a noticeable pull from where I was standing, he remarked. Could you perhaps explain why that isn’t a penalty? It is disheartening because although we can see it from 50 meters away and everyone seems to think the same thing, the playback did not show it.

“I am a fan of VAR even though that is not my job.” It is obvious that better decisions should be made if such is the case. In this game, that is a detail. I anticipate that it will be accurate on Saturday.

Rangers trailed Celtic by eight points at the end of the Premiership after 38 games, but Clement is still optimistic that the Ibrox club can defeat the recently crowned Scottish champions in the cup final and conclude the 2023–24 campaign with a massive victory.

“Everything is possible in one game,” he declared. “In the three matches I’ve played against them, we’ve drawn once and lost the other two 2-1 at Celtic Park when we used 10 men for a large portion of those contests. It was quite tight each time.

I’m confident that my players will give it their all in this last game to wow the crowd. That’s why I think we can prevail.
