Garrett Whitlock is out for the Red Sox with an elbow injury.

NBC Sports Boston first reported that Garrett Whitlock was benched by the Red Sox because of an elbow ailment.

The Boston Red Sox rotation won’t be seeing Garrett Whitlock back in it very soon.

The right-hander experienced an injury setback while recovering at Triple-A Worcester. He has been out since April 17 due to an oblique strain.

Following his start on Wednesday, Whitlock experienced soreness in his throwing elbow, Red Sox manager Alex Cora informed reporters on Friday.

Prior to Boston’s series opening at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals, Cora stated that Garrett experienced stiffness in the elbow area yesterday.

“Let’s see what happens this weekend and put him on hold for the time being. On Monday, we will know more. Since he stayed at home, they will complete the task over the weekend.

We’ll gather data and assess our situation. Whitlock has previously sustained elbow issues. Due to right elbow discomfort and ulnar neuritis, the 27-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and spent two periods on the IL throughout the previous season.

The Red Sox will stick with Brayan Bello, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Nick Pivetta, and Cooper Criswell in the starting rotation as they wait for a diagnosis on Whitlock’s most recent illness.

Whitlock was supposed to make his Tropicana Field comeback Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays, but it now looks like Boston will have Houck on the mound that evening.

Despite Whitlock and several other pitchers missing time due to injuries, Boston’s pitching rotation has performed admirably. With a 2.79 ERA, the team led the MLB going into Friday.
