After 11 seasons, a former Rams first-round selection leaves the NFL.

A player is usually held to extremely high standards whenever they are taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. Nonetheless, this makes sense because first-round selections are held for the incoming prospects who have the most chance of having an influence on the league.

The Rams, who were still based in St. Louis, made the decision to select former LSU defensive end Michael Brockers with their 14th overall first-round pick in 2012.

That’s right, Brockers has declared his retirement from the NFL following 11 years of service. With a recent post on his personal Instagram account, the former defensive tackle for the Rams and Detroit Lions announced his news.

Brockers was a quick addition to the Rams’ middle defensive line during his rookie campaign. The Rams’ run defense improved from being 31st in the NFL in 2011 to being 15th in the league in 2012, thanks in large part to their best rookie.

Brockers ended with 31 tackles (seven for a loss), four sacks, and one forced fumble in 13 games during his rookie season with the team. He had 46 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 2013 to cap off his first year.

It appeared that Brockers would live up to the expectations placed on him after his first two years in the league, having been taken in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Although Brockers never became a major league player, his tenure with the Rams and Lions was nonetheless rather good.

Throughout seven of his eleven NFL seasons, he made at least sixteen appearances. He finished every year from 2017 to 2021 with at least 50 tackles and one sack.

During his time with the Rams, he was a very reliable member of a defense that had several dynamic players, such as Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Marcus Peters, Robert Quinn, and Leonard Floyd.

In Week 11 of the 2022 NFL season, Brocker made his final appearance in an NFL game as a member of the Lions, playing 12 defensive snaps. The experienced defensive lineman was let go by Detroit shortly after the 2022 season concluded.

Brockers apparently worked out for the Tennessee Titans a few months after he was cut by the Lions, but he was not signed to a deal. The 33-year-old has decided to hang up his cleats after a very good term in the NFL, rather than attempting to prolong his career in the game.
