Joao Gomes, a midfielder for Wolves, is expected to be a top target for Liverpool in the forthcoming summer transfer window as they will step up their chase of him, according to Anfield Watch sources.
From his time at Flamengo until he signed for Wolves in January 2023 for an estimated £15 million, the Merseyside club has always harbored great admiration for the 23-year-old Brazilian international, despite interest from Ligue 1 team Lyon, as we understand it.
He excelled at the center of Flamengo’s midfield and won the 2022 Copa Libertadores. In September of 2022, he said ESPN Brasil, “Liverpool are a team I’d play for.” “Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”
Gomes is a great fit for Liverpool and the playing philosophy of new manager Arne Slot, who is expected to arrive from Feyenoord. Slot prefers to work with a team that has a lot of strikers and offensive midfielders.
Going forward, it’s unclear which club Gomes would choose to play for or even whether he’s open to leaving Molineux. However, a number of other clubs, notably West Ham, are reportedly in talks with Wolves about the young player.
With an optional one-year extension, the player’s contract with the Midlands club expires in 2028.
While Wolves would probably pay more for Gomes’ talents, FootballTransfers’ Estimated Transfer Value methodology values him at about £16 million.
Gomes has played in 33 Premier League games for Wolves this season. As a result of his outstanding performances, he was called up for the first time to the Brazil national team in March.
Liverpool is looking to add a central midfielder this summer as Wataru Endo’s long-term future is in doubt. This season, under Jurgen Klopp, the 31-year-old Japan international had moments of brilliance but has faltered as the season comes to an end.
Meanwhile, Alexis Mac Allister finds himself compelled to play a defensive midfield role that is obviously not his natural position.
With the departure of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Fabinho, and Arthur Melo, the Reds completely revamped their midfield last summer.
Endo, Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch arrived, but Liverpool is poised to lose Thiago Alcantara and is looking to invest again in that area.
