Rangers given a glimpse of hope in signing £13 million star who ‘wants to depart’

While it is doubtful that Rangers will win the race for a midfielder labeled ‘one of the greatest in Europe,’ the £13 million-rated playmaker will say his goodbyes this summer. Rangers and Celtic, according to HITC, have been made aware of the 23-year-old’s availability.

The Premier League’s heavyweights are also impressed. Of course, they do. Eduard Spertsyan appears to be one of those signings who, like Jota at Celtic, has the potential to go into Scotland and dominate the domestic league. Suggestions that Spertsyan is one of Europe’s top attacking midfielders may be premature. He has yet to prove himself outside of Russia, after all. However, a player who scored double digits in both goals and assists in 2022/23 and could do so again in 2023/24 would undoubtedly be an immediate step up from those who came before him at Ibrox. And that likely includes Tom Lawrence and Todd Cantwell, assuming Spertsyan’s line-breaking, ball-carrying abilities can be recreated on British soil.

Rangers like Krasnodar star Eduard Spertsyan
“It is no coincidence that Spertsyan has good statistics,” former Armenia international Alexander Karapetyan, tells RB Sport. “He has proven himself again. I hope he can continue to progress.”

Karapetyan claims to be in touch with the Krasnodar star, Spertsyan informing him that he plans to leave Russian football in order to achieve his ambitions of playing in European competition.

“I communicate with Edik (Spertsyan’s nickname), I know a lot of things,” Karapetyan adds. “I hope that everything will work out the way he wants, and he wants to go to Europe and play in big tournaments.

“It’s a shame that this is the situation now, and that Russian clubs cannot participate in European competitions. All football players want to play at a high level, but in Russia, unfortunately, this will not be possible.”

Russian teams have been prohibited from entering UEFA competition at a senior level since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. As such, Krasnodar look set to miss out on a place in the Champions, Europa or Conference League, despite Spertsyan’s stellar performances firing The Bulls into the midst of a title-race domestically.

Issues look set to ruin expectations of the Ibrox deal. According to Spertsyan, Krasnodar will likely want a fee of around £13 million. This would be the 23-year-old Rangers’ most costly signing to date.

Even if Philippe Clement’s squad can fund such a purchase, HITC knows that Rangers will face additional challenges from the British government, which is keen to prevent UK-based clubs from investing heavily in the Russian game. “Spertsyan’s contract runs until 2026. In principle, he may escape,” argues Dimitry Seluk, an agent with extensive contacts in this region of the world. “But Russian club Rangers appear to be much more likely to sign another promising teenager playing his trade in the East. A £2.5 million proposal has apparently been made for Levsko Sofia defender Jose Cordoba, with negotiations in the ‘advanced’ stage.
