Celtic destroy Kilmarnock to retain Scottish Premiership title

Thanks to a 5-0 thumping of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, Celtic have won the Scottish Premiership for the third consecutive season.

Tuesday night’s 5-2 victory over Dundee by Rangers, who came back from a two-goal deficit, postponed Brendan Rodgers’ team’s crowning achievement.

Nevertheless, Celtic needed only a draw at Kilmarnock to maintain their position as Scotland’s best team; they began the day three points ahead of the Gers, and they did so in spectacular fashion to clinch their third consecutive title.

The goal surge was initiated by Adam Idah in the fifth minute. Daizen Maeda doubled Celtic’s lead after 12 minutes, and James Forrest gave the champions a three-point lead just before halftime.

Matt O’Riley’s double in the second half sealed the victory, meaning that Celtic had now won the title in 12 of the previous 13 seasons—the exception being Rangers’ 2020–21 campaign.

Rodgers’ team will play their final home game of the season against St Mirren on Saturday before trying to complete a double header against Old Firm rivals Rangers in the Scottish Cup final on May 25.
