Brendan Rodgers’ side are looking to claim the Scottish Cup with the Premiership title all-but secured
This season, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is aiming for a Double, and he may break some Rangers records in the process. The championship is almost within grasp.
While Rodgers’ team can win it with just a point from their remaining Scottish Premiership games against Kilmarnock and St Mirren, the Hoops know that any mistake from Philippe Clement’s team in their final two games against Dundee and Hearts would see a third consecutive title make its way to Glasgow’s east end.
The focus is rapidly shifting to the upcoming derby blockbuster between the Glasgow giants, though, as the league is all but decided.
Rangers has already won the League Cup this season, so both teams will probably be going for a double in the Scottish Cup Final. Celtic, on the other hand, should have the Premiership championship safely stored up in the Celtic Park trophy cabinet once more. But if Rodgers’ team wins, a number of Ibrox records might fall.
However, what would it actually mean for the record books if Callum McGregor lifted the trophy? Record Sport examines the four records that Celtic might surpass or equal this year.
European record for domestic cup victories
Although Celtic has been the dominant team in the cup tournaments lately, Rangers has performed well enough to stay up with its opponents and share the record for the most European domestic cup victories.
Earlier in the season, Clement guided the Light Blues to the League Cup, leveling the score at 62 trophies apiece. The record would be recovered in its whole with a victory by either team at the national stadium.
most of cup and league doubles
If Celtic wins the Scottish Cup, they will set yet another remarkable record. Rangers and the Hoops currently have 12 victories apiece in league and cup doubleheaders.
Rangers last won the double under Walter Smith in 2008–09, when they also won the Scottish Cup. Celtic, on the other hand, most recently accomplished the double under Ange Postecoglou in 2021–2022, when they took home the Premiership and League Cup.
Old Firm Derby winning streak
Whoever raises the Scottish Cup to end the season will have the ultimate say in bragging rights, and it will also have a significant impact on the teams’ all-time head-to-head record. This season, Odgers has dominated the derby, while Clement has yet to secure his first triumph.
Rangers and Celtic now have 169 and 168 victories, respectively, in the derby all-time record. Fans of the Hornets will be eager to see that statistic eliminated on the way to a double.
The most successful club in Europe
Should Celtic prevail in the Scottish Cup, their total number of trophies will be tied with Rangers’. The Hoops would then tie the Light Blues’ record as the most successful club in Europe.
With just two games left, the Hoops are virtually assured of winning the Scottish Premiership, which will mark their 54th Scottish league victory, after defeating Clement’s team to go six points clear at the top. They will reach an all-time prize total of 117 against the Rangers’ 118.
Furthermore, if Celtic wins the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden, the competing teams will remarkably tie with 118 trophies apiece.
But none of them will surpass Al Ahly, who have won 121 trophies, to become the most successful club in the world.
