Cowboys Rookies Take Exciting Next Steps on Monday
The Dallas Cowboys’ most recent rookie class is under more scrutiny than previous classes. After all, the Cowboys made little moves when free agency started, instead focusing on the 2024 NFL Draft as their primary method of recruiting talent before aiming to end the franchise’s Super Bowl drought next season. With the pressure increasing as Week 1 approaches, Cowboys fans are eager to see what the latest crop of rookies can achieve. After giving the fanbase a taste of the future during last week’s training camp, this year’s rookie class took the next step on their NFL adventure on Monday.
According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys’ rookies and veterans practiced together on Monday. Although the rookies did not see much action, it is a critical first step toward integruating them with Dallas’ returning players.
Gehlken added that the Cowboys’ rookies kept things simple for the monumental moment. There was more of a “walkthrough pace” to the practice as the coaches focused “more on technique and playbook install.” Things are expected to kick into the next gear when the franchise’s organized team activities (OTAs) begin on Tuesday, May 21.
The Cowboys received a youthful injection at last month’s draft, leaving Detroit with eight new rookies. Jerry Jones & Co. did well at addressing both sides of the ball as four draft picks were used on offensive prospects while the other half brought in a new quartet of defenders.
Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton was the Cowboys’ highest draft pick, taken 29th overall in a trade with the Detroit Lions. Guyton is joined by fellow offensive linemen Cooper Beebe (Round 3, Pick 73) and Nathan Thomas (Round 7, Pick 233) in his attempt to protect Dak Prescott, while former Southeast Missouri State wideout Ryan Flournoy (Round 6, Pick 216) is a potential weapon. Meanwhile, Dallas’ highest drafted rookie defender is defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland, who was selected with pick number 56. The Cowboys also signed linebacker Marist Liufau (Round 3, Pick 87), defensive back Caelen Carson (Round 5, Pick 174), and defensive lineman Justin Rogers (Round 7, Pick 244).
Following a successful draft performance, the future of the Lone Star State is bright. With OTAs approaching, the Cowboys presently have the eighth-best Super Bowl LIX odds (+1500) at FanDuel Sportsbook.
