Champions Celtic are up against competition from Premier League heavyweights, and Alex McCarthy is “considered” for a transfer.

The Southampton keeper is out of contract and Brendan Rodgers is thought to be a long-time admirer of the 34-year-old.

According to reports, Alex McCarthy is being considered for a summer transfer to Celtic.

The Southampton goalkeeper’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, which might yet result in promotion to the Premier League when Saints play West Brom in the playoffs to face either Leeds or Norwich City.

Following an injury to No. 1 Gavin Bazunu, McCarthy has returned to Russell Martin’s starting lineup, and his play at the end of the season has been strong.

Additionally, McCarthy is being watched by Celtic, the Daily Mail reports.

With Joe Hart scheduled to retire, Brendan Rodgers will need a new first pick. After Rangers defeats Man City at Hampden on May 25, the former Man City player will put up his boots.

Because he prefers a keeper who can use the ball at his feet, Rodgers has long admired McCarthy and was eager to sign him early in McCarthy’s career.

Yet English powerhouses Liverpool and Newcastle will provide the Hoops with competition.

Given the Toon’s widely reported requirement to maintain balance in the books in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR), McCarthy’s status as a free agent will appeal to both teams, who are searching for keepers.

McCarthy would be considered a backup at Anfield and St James’ Park, though. Eddie Howe’s go-to number one is the fit again Nick Pope, while Alisson Becker leads the Reds.

Although Caoimhin Kelleher is a backup, the Irishman might move on this summer in an effort to earn a regular start.

Although Celtic has been linked to him, the Scottish champions are probably not willing to pay Liverpool’s high asking price.
