Entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent isn’t easy. In 2022, the Dallas Cowboys gave an unselected safety a chance and the player grabbed the opportunity.
Juanyeh Thomas played college football for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. After not being selected in the 2021 Draft, Dallas decided to give the safety a shot the following year.
He will begin his second season in the league, but it was a difficult journey for him to make the squad in the first place.As soon as he joined the team, Thomas began to feel the pressure straight away.

“I’m telling you, man, a lot of things happen, and when your number gets called, you’ve got to go take that, for real,” he said. “It’s going to get pretty dark, and you’re going to think that you aren’t useful to the team.” “Remain locked in and focused at all times.” Thomas thought he was playing well during the 2022 preseason, but he was ultimately left off of the 53-man roster. He was a member of the practice squad for the whole season. He said, “It was kind of like a punch to the gut.” That was incredibly humble, in my opinion.
And then, I’ll be honest, for the entire year, I was simply in a bad place. His dreams were dashed and his debut in the active squad was delayed when he sustained a knee injury on the one occasion he thought he would be included in the squad.
From the safety perspective, the injury was sufficient reason for the organization to send him home. It’s clear from the term that your purpose on the practice squad is to practice. And it can be a little frightening when you can’t practice. “Are they going to cut me if I recover healthily?” He’s still a Cowboy, so we already know that the outcome was favorable. There were “too many good things to be cut” about Thomas. The young player’s coaches informed him that he had done “too many good things to be cut,” and he began to ponder the possibility that the Cowboys would release him.
That was all he required in 2023 to make things right. Mike McCarthy was the source of his first award. He was the player who, according to the head coach, had improved the most over the course of the year. Thomas stated, “That made me feel good, but we had a loaded safety room, so I couldn’t even look at it and relax.” “In order to set myself apart, I simply had to keep making plays.” The 23-year-old accomplished a memorable feat in his lone game as a starter for the team.
