Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy and Ezekiel Elliott’s Comeback Lead New Strategy
With the return of seasoned running back Ezekiel Elliott, the Dallas Cowboys are getting ready for a significant change. Elliott is back in the game, but the Cowboys are planning a novel move this time around. Elliott used to be the Cowboys’ bellcow back, responsible for leading the team’s running game plan. But his coming back to Dallas presents a different picture. To transform the field game, Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy sees a shared responsibility model—or “a running-back by committee.” The team plans to split up the job among its running backs more fairly as opposed to depending solely on one primary back, as it did with Elliott in the past.
Head Coach Mike McCarthy clarified the change in role for Elliott post the rookie minicamp.
“We’re a running back by committee (team),” he explained, but I think he’ll definitely play at the level that he’s played at in my time here. I don’t see any drop-off in the way he moves. He’s in good shape.”
Elliott has repeatedly shown that he still has a lot of play left in him. His time spent with the New England Patriots demonstrated that he is still quite strong. He scored three touchdowns and gained 642 yards.
