Disappointed with Celtic critics for treating him like a newbie

Angry with his Celtic detractors, Brendan Rodgers claims he’s been treated like a “novice” ever since moving back to Scotland.

It’s unclear to whom he is specifically referring with that statement. But he believes he hasn’t been going through the motions after witnessing his club make a significant move to keep the Premiership crown.

Celtic overcame Rangers, Glasgow’s bitter rivals, 2-1 at Parkhead. Shortly after, Matt O’Riley scored the opening goal and John Lundstram scored into his own net.

Cyriel Dessers succeeded in retrieving one and gave Philippe Clement’s soldiers a much-needed lifeline. However, Lundstram’s horrific first half was capped off when he was sent out for a horrible challenge on Celtic’s Alistair Johnston. Despite missing several opportunities to improve the score in the second half, Rodgers was pleased with his team’s performance.

But during the 2023–24 campaign, the Northern Irishman couldn’t resist making fun of his detractors. “What is every other manager doing if I’m just going through the motions?” he asked the journalists.

Personally, ever since I returned, I’ve been treated like a rookie—as if this is my first job.

Still, I want to make sure that Celtic wins above all else. To me, the team’s mentality is what matters most, but I do recognize that part of that is the criticism.

You’re able to observe how far we’ve come, how we’ve remained cohesive, how we’ve stayed together, and how we got to this stage where we’re almost done with the injuries. We wish to run over it rather than just cross it. That’s our mindset—two games remain, along with a final.
