ill-willed? Tension between the Bruins and Panthers is evident in these Game 2 stats.

In the Stanley Cup playoffs between the Bruins and Panthers, we’ve officially reached the point when Boston and Florida are at odds with one another.

Although there was already a chance for animosity because Florida defeated Boston in a seven-game first-round series the previous season, tensions erupted on Wednesday night following the Panthers’ Game 2 victory at Amerant Bank Arena.

Think about this: the last game saw 136 penalty minutes given out. With 77 penalty minutes at the end of Game 2, the Bruins had their highest total in a postseason match since 1988. In all, the Panthers accumulated 71 penalty minutes.

According to ESPN, this was the first postseason match since 2015 in which both teams had more than 70 penalty minutes. The majority of those were caused by a tumultuous conclusion that featured a one-on-one match between David Pastrnak and Matthew Tkachuk, two genuine NHL talents.

After Game 2, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery told reporters, “These are two teams that are rivals.” Both this year and last year, we played each other. There will be a series.

The series was tied at one game apiece after the Panthers easily defeated the Sixers 6-1 on Wednesday. Puck drop at TD Garden is set for 7 p.m. ET on Friday, as the action moves to Boston for Game 3. NESN+ will have an hour of pregame programming previously.

When examining the lengthy and storied history of the NHL, the Bruins-Panthers rivalry may not immediately spring to mind. The clubs are currently vying for a position in the Eastern Conference finals, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see tensions flare up once more.
