Motherwell captain Liam Kelly is reportedly being considered by Celtic to take Joe Hart’s place. Stevie Woods of Celtic is rumored to be an admirer of the 28-year-old goalkeeper, who has an expiring deal at Fir Park this summer.
The No. 1 jersey is up for grabs as Joe Hart retires this summer, and several names have been connected to a move to Paradise. Kelly, though, is reportedly a strong candidate to succeed Hart, according to the Daily Mail.
Kelly’s contract is up and he can leave on a free transfer, but his performances in front of a weak Motherwell defense are drawing attention from England.
It is anticipated that Benjamin Siegrist will also go this summer, therefore the Scotland internationalist may be considered as a backup option.
As a backup, Kelly is undoubtedly a better option than Scott Bain, but she is not likely to match Hart’s characteristics.
Kelly began his career with the Rangers, going on loan to Livingston and East Fife before settling down permanently at Tony Macaroni Stadium.
His performance there earned him a transfer to QPR, but things didn’t work out there, and he was sent back to Motherwell.
Kelly’s Scottish heritage and domestic training would contribute to Celtic’s UEFA team standards.
Fans may feel a little uneasy about the player’s signing, though, as it is similar to signing Mark Brown, who rose through the ranks at Rangers, to back Artur Boruc. This analogy has a flaw in that Kelly cannot clearly endorse a No. 1.
