Gary O’Neil is optimistic that Wolves can avoid the mistakes of the previous season, especially with regard to one particularly spectacular error in 2023.
The team will be keen to have a successful summer transfer window. Due to budgetary constraints, Wolves’ summer of 2017 was gloomy since important players were traded for cash, leaving no space for replacements.
After the Spaniard left and Gary O’Neil took over, Fosun was unable to provide Julen Lopetegui the money he needed to bolster his reduced team. Luckily, the Englishman has performed admirably considering how little resources he had to work with during the 2023–24 season, making the impending transfer window crucial to the team’s advancement.
Now that a recurrence of last summer’s lows is out of the question, the Old Gold have the chance to add much-needed resources to strengthen depth and quality within O’Neil’s squad.

Last summer, Wolves made a mistake with Viktor Gyokeres move. Wolves were reportedly exploring a summer transfer for Viktor Gyokeres from Coventry City, since the striker was a revelation in the Championship during the 2022–2023 season.
Due to worries over Financial Fair Play, the Old Gold were unable to pay the Sweden international, who was reportedly valued at approximately £25 million at the time.
Gyokeres joined for Sporting CP for a meager €24 million (£21 million) after it was reported in June that Wolves was still pressing for his signing.
Since then, the lucky striker has scored an incredible 41 goals in 47 games during the 2023–2024 season, hinting at what the Midlands club may have achieved if it had the money to try to entice the forward to the Premier League.
O’Neil may seek forwards, and Union SG forward Mohamed Amoura is the most recent player to be connected in the run-up to this summer’s transfer market.
Mohamed Amoura won’t allow Wolves to replicate Viktor Gyokere’s error. According to reports this week, Wolves is among the teams that have made “enquires” about Amoura, who has helped score 30 goals this year.
The Algerian, who can play both centrally and as a winger, has demonstrated his value in front of goal with 23 goals and seven assists in 44 games.
With Wolves undoubtedly still smarting from last year’s mistake, the forward, who is rumored to be valued at €20 million (£17 million), may prove to be an affordable asset for O’Neil to take into consideration.
The Midlands club is in dire need of a goal scorer, and the 24-year-old is more than capable of doing so after being described as “incredibly clinical” by talent scout Jacek Kulig earlier this season.
Wolves are devastated to be without a recognized number nine, especially given they had the opportunity to sign Gyokeres, who has now become one of Europe’s most exciting prospects, in the summer.
O’Neil will be hoping to see his ambitions fulfilled this summer, as Amoura possesses the goal-scoring ability required at Molineux, after having previously issued a warning to Fosun ahead of the upcoming season.
