The Cowboys’ visit by Zay Jones demonstrates close family ties

According to sources who spoke to Jordan Schultz, veteran wide receiver Zay Jones will visit the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday as a free agency. He will be visiting the team for the third time since the Jacksonville Jaguars dismissed him on April 30.

Prior to his trip to Dallas, Jones had meetings with the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans. The former second-round pick spent the last two seasons with the Jaguars after agreeing to a three-year, $24 million contract with Jacksonville in 2022.
Jones has a successful rookie campaign in 2022 with the Jaguars, setting career highs in receiving yards (823) and receptions (82). In 16 games, he scored five touchdowns, 15 of which he started.

Jones suffered setbacks in 2023, missing eight games due to injuries. 34 receptions for 321 yards and two touchdowns in nine games were his season-ending total. In each of his first six NFL seasons, he participated in at least fifteen games.
Jones has a connection to the Cowboys through his father Robert, who Dallas selected in the first round of the 1992 NFL Draft. The elder Jones, a linebacker, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Cowboys and was a key member of their three Super Bowl-winning squads in the 90s. He started 66 of his 51 games with Dallas (including the playoffs) and started two of the Cowboys’ Super Bowl wins.

Zay Jones was born in Dallas and attended high school in Austin. He followed in his father’s footsteps and played college football at East Carolina University.
Using four of their eight selections in the 2024 NFL Draft on the offensive and defensive lines, respectively, the Cowboys maintained their advantage. Jerry Jones is currently seeking to bolster Dallas with a few role players that might make all the difference.

The Cowboys wide receiving room includes Pro Bowl return man KaVontae Turpin, Jalen Tolbert, and All-Pro wideout CeeDee Lamb, among others. Just two years into his five-year contract, Michael Gallup was rather unexpectedly let go by Dallas on March 15. On April 30, he signed a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.
This offseason, the Cowboys have made it clear that extending quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract is their top priority; but, negotiations have not yet advanced. The visit by Zay Jones occurs one day after Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones offered Prescott a vote of confidence and stated that he still thinks the 30-year-old gunslinger can win a title for the team.

He said that the Cowboys are “hanging around the rim” and have been right there in the last three seasons, competing for a championship.

Although Zay Jones might be a useful addition and option for Dallas’ offense, signing him won’t make the Cowboys any more competitive than they already are.

Considering that he has visited three different teams as a free agent, he is highly sought after in the league and ought to at least find a place for training camp.

The Cowboys have had a rather quiet offseason in 2024, which is surprising considering how important the next season is to the team. A reliable NFL playoff club starting a season with both its quarterback and head coach in the last year of their contracts is a rare sight.
