According to reports, Rangers and Premier League powerhouse Arsenal are negotiating a deal for Scottish wonderkid Alexander Smith. However, Smith may decide to sign a professional contract sooner rather than later.
The 15-year-old attacking midfielder, who has been connected to several elite teams, and the Ibrox club are reportedly nearing an agreement.
based in America Smith holds dual citizenship with both the United States and Scotland. According to Tom Bogert, a journalist for The Athletic, the Light Blues are getting close to signing Smith to a contract after he was recently linked to a move to London’s Emirates Stadium.
The young star, who will turn 16 in the summer, has played youth international hockey for both Scotland and the United States.
Arsenal has been following him for a “significant period of time,” and MLS teams and other top-flight English clubs are still preparing to make a transfer move.
Despite rumors that Rangers had successfully repelled interest from elsewhere, it is thought that no contract has been finalized with them as of yet.
Football Scotland claims that the Gunners were prepared to entice him south with a six-figure pay package in order to gain his talents. “Rangers closing on signing highly-rated Scottish/United States dual-nat midfielder Alexander Smith to his first pro deal, I’m told,” tweeted Bogert on X, formerly Twitter.
Nothing completed as of yet. A few MLS teams are still asking for more Premier League teams. Smith, who turns 16 this summer, was previously connected to Arsenal.
Thanks in great part to academy director Zeb Jacobs, who is leaving Feyenoord, Rangers have worked hard in recent years to enhance their junior setup.
They brought in players with significant potential for the future, notably winger Thompson Ishaka, Millwall’s Zak Lovelace, and highly regarded midfielder Bailey Rice from Motherwell.
But when can fans anticipate these young players under Philippe Clement making their debut in the first squad, and what is the expected progression for them that would persuade Smith to pledge his future to the team?
