Graeme Souness discusses the altercation between Clement and Rodgers prior to Celtic vs. Rangers game

Graeme Souness maintains that by Saturday midday, the Old Firm dugout battle of words should mean absolutely nothing.

Brendan Rodgers promised Celtic will have “some fun” against their championship rivals, and a win would virtually guarantee three straight titles, leaving Philippe Clement furious.

The Rangers manager declared that he would “never say about an opponent” and accused his opponent of disparaging his team.

The Ibrox icon Souness, who won the PFA Scotland special merit award on Sunday night, is well-versed in derby mind games, but he maintains that he would never fall victim to them.

About the altercation before to the game, Souness stated: “It’s not a path I took.

“Anything mental stated by anyone was meaningless. That’s exactly how I was brought up. We show up, we do our work, and we give it our all.”

Celtic’s victory would put them six points ahead with two games remaining and, considering the Hoops’ advantage in goal differential, would essentially declare them the winners.

However, if the Gers win at Parkhead without any support from away fans, they can rekindle their waning title ambitions and go into the final two games even on points.

“There’s something wrong with you,” Souness continued, “if you need motivation to play in an Old Firm game.”

I’ve never participated in a derby this size before. There is the intense football rivalry between the two largest teams in the nation.

There is no doubting the importance of the game, even while we are aware of its unpleasant aspects. These games require character to win. That’s not particularly new.

It involves having enough motivation to maintain your focus and concentration levels without becoming distracted or losing your train of thought.
