Cards RB: Cowboys are urged to trade for him.

James Conner, a running back for the Arizona Cardinals, just turned 29 and is nearing the end of his deal in the desert.

Conner’s post-2024 plans have been the subject of considerable conjecture, which was eased when Florida State running back Trey Benson was selected by the Cardinals on the second day of the NFL Draft.

Benson, the second running back selected for the three-day competition, has a build, speed, and power profile akin to Conner’s. It appears that Arizona has discovered a long-term backfield option beyond Conner, leading some other publications to speculate that the former Pittsburgh Steelers rusher might be available.

Recently, a fake deal involving Conner and the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a sixth-round choice was put up by Pro Football Network.

Dallas failed to select a running back in the draft, instead reuniting with veteran Ezekiel Elliott on a one-year deal. Elliott can no longer handle a full-time workload, while the rest of the Cowboys’ RB options — Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Royce Freman, and others — are uninspiring,” wrote Dallas Robinson.

“Conner is a three-down back who could become Dallas’ 1A, and the Cardinals might be willing to trade him after selecting Florida State RB Trey Benson in the third round. While Conner almost always misses time with injuries, Elliott, Dowdle, et al., could fill in for a few games if needed. Arizona already paid Conner’s March roster bonus, so he’d cost the Cowboys roughly $4.5 million in 2024.”

The trade package is a little confusing; if Conner is a true first-round pick (especially compared to the older Ezekiel Elliot), it’s difficult to see Arizona giving up merely a sixth-round pick.

Though it’s difficult to believe the Cardinals, who operate as a run-first system, would trade with Conner for so little, even with Benson in the backfield, Arizona general manager Monti Ossenfort will always listen to calls.
