Ipswich Town supporters “erupted,” according to Kris Boyd, as word got out at Portman Road that Leeds United had fallen behind Southampton.
At Elland Road, Adam Armstrong gave the Saints the lead in the eighteenth minute, and word of the score swiftly spread among the Ipswich supporters, putting Leeds behind 1-0.
After learning that the Whites had conceded, the Tractor Boys’ supporters rejoiced since Leeds’ failure to defeat Southampton meant that Ipswich would advance.
Boyd stated, “The stadium erupted when the news from Leeds filtered through!” on Saturday, May 4, on Sky Sports Soccer. The supporters feel as though they are rising and are in a fantasy world.
Leeds United will participate in the playoff lottery. Leeds’ outcome was irrelevant following Ipswich’s 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at home, but even if the Tractor Boys had made a mistake, the Whites would not have been able to capitalize.
Daniel Farke would not have preferred the outcome going into the playoffs, where they will play Norwich City in the semi-finals, after their 2-1 loss at Elland Road on the last day of the regular season.
Joel Piroe’s equalizer for Leeds came just three minutes after Armstrong’s first goal, effectively nulling the goal that the Ipswich supporters had so raucously celebrated. Leeds, however, was unable to manufacture a comeback after Leeds’ goal was ultimately scored by Will Smallbone in the 35th minute.
Furthermore, the Whites’ loss was justified. As proof of their prowess in front of goal, Southampton outperformed Farke’s team in terms of xG (1.08 to 0.85) and xGOT (1.35 to 0.37).
With an eye toward making their Premier League comeback at the first attempt, Leeds will want to gather some confidence prior to the playoffs and put up better performances than they have recently.
