Rangers will suffer a severe blow when they lose a star player who might have been playing his final game for the Gers as the Scottish Premiership title race heats up towards a dramatic conclusion.
Rangers injury updates
Injury concerns have struck Rangers and Philippe Clement at an inopportune moment, as the player who is still chasing the Old Firm title and Scotland’s greatest reward, Connor Goldson, will miss the remainder of the campaign.
“Wednesday in training, Connor hurt his knee bad. After a scan, he will be out for the rest of the season,” the manager of the Gers disclosed via Ibrox News. He is among the leaders having played 48 games this season, so it is a major setback. He told me he wanted to watch the boys play in the dressing room.”
Goldson – a player who knows all about dethroning Celtic having done so in the 2020/21 season – will be a big miss for those at Ibrox at a crucial time, especially with the Scottish Cup final against the Bhoys also coming up at the end of the month. But he’s not the only one who will miss the remainder of the season.
Clement went on to give more updates on injuries, announcing that Danilo Pereira Da Silva and Oscar Cortes will also be sidelined for the whole of the season. This deals the Gers two further setbacks, particularly considering that Cortes has probably played his final game for the team unless his Lens loan agreement is extended this summer.
The teenage winger will now miss the final five games of the Rangers season after suffering a muscular ailment that first occurred at the beginning of March. He has missed 11 games thus far. People in Scotland will have to consider what could have been if Cortes’s time at Ibrox is over.
Young Cortes might be worth the Rangers’ risk.
Despite missing 11 games due to an unfortunate injury, Cortes may be able to secure a long-term opportunity with the Rangers this summer. Given that Cortes is still only 20 years old, the Gers would be wise to pursue the trade if they can reach an agreeable price.
With just three Scottish Premiership starts under his belt, Cortes already had a goal and an assist, so more playing time could have elevated his status even more. The winger’s absence cost Clement and the rest of Scotland the opportunity to witness him at his finest, but a permanent switch will allow him to make up for lost time.
With Clement confirming discussions with Lens about Cortes via the Glasgow Times, it appears that a permanent trade is also conceivable. Clement stated: “We are talking with Lens about what the scenario is because in this circumstance it is a different situation than when he was healthy. He was physically fit and exhibiting the appropriate traits at the moment, but it was only temporary. Then, the price must be appropriate.”
Therefore, even if Cortes has officially played his final game for Rangers, the summer transfer window may yet present the winger with another opportunity to showcase his greatest form at Ibrox when healthy.
