Leeds United Enters The Eredivisie Defender Race

A report on Balls.ie states that Leeds United has become one of several teams monitoring PEC Zwolle defender Anselmo Garcia MacNulty. With 28 appearances and one goal this season, the 21-year-old has been in excellent form for the Eredivisie team. Having played on loan for NAC Breda in the second division last season, MacNulty is no stranger to Dutch football.

During his tenure at the Rat Verlegh Stadium last season, he participated in 38 games and made his debut for the Republic of Ireland Under 21 against Iceland. In the summer of 2023, PEC Zwolle acquired the left-sided defender from Vfl Wolfsburg on a permanent basis, and he promptly had his contract extended until 2026.

This hasn’t stopped Leeds from expressing interest in the Republic of Ireland Under 21 international, nor has it stopped promotion-chasing Southampton or Leicester City from joining the Premier League. The current market worth of MacNulty is approximately £800,000, a sum that is unlikely to deter the three potential buyers. Although he was raised in the center of defense, the massive 6′ 2″ defender has spent most of this season at left back for the Bluefingers. After the most recent round of games, he was named the left-back on the WhoScored? Team of the Week.

The Irish player is reportedly attracting interest from Club Brugge in Belgium in addition to the three English teams. MacNulty, a player who played some of his youth football with the club, is reportedly also of interest to Real Betis, a Spanish team. The Writer’s Perspective Festy Ebosele of Udinese and Armstrong Oko-Flex of FC Zurich are just two examples of young Irish footballers who have experience traveling overseas.

Playing across the continent is nothing new for MacNulty, who is establishing his reputation and accumulating important first-team experience.

It remains to be seen if he will want to take on the challenge of playing in the Premier League or La Liga, or if he will want to keep getting consistent first-team minutes. Both moving back to his native country with Betis and moving to England would increase his prospects of being called up to the senior Ireland team. The huge defender is expected to have a busy summer.
